Staphylococcus (Gram-positive cocci) is a genus of the Staphylococcaceae family. Staphylococcaceae family contain 5 genera: Staphylococcus, Jeotgalicoccus, Macrococcus, Nosocomiicoccus, and Salinicoccus. “Staphylo-” (Greek: ‘cluster of grapes’) + “coccus” (Latin: ‘spherical bacterium’); divide along multiple axes, thereby generating irregular grape-like clusters. Staphylococcus species are non-motile, non-spore forming bacteria and are catalase-positive; they are facultative anaerobic (best grow in an aerobic condition). Staphylococcus species are cocci (spherical) and grape-like clusters under the microscopic scheme and are facultative anaerobic. Staphylococcus includes over than 35 species, that are mostly non-pathogens and harmless. Many of species are normal flora of the skin and mucous membranes of humans, animals and other organisms, worldwide. Most common pathogens in humans’ infections are: S. aureus (is known as coagulase positive Staph.), S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus (this 2 species are known as coagulase negative Staph. /CNS/CoNS). Staphylococci can cause many forms of infection in human; Staphylococcus aureus is most common microorganism in infectious diseases and hospital infections. Staphylococcus spp. identification, routinely based on various test: shape, hemolysis and color of colonies, growth on MSA, clumping factor, coagulase, thermo-stable deoxyribonuclease, sensivity to novobiocin and Urease.
Streptococcus (Gram-positive cocci) is a genus of the Streptococcaceae family. Streptococcaceae family contain 3 genera: Streptococcus, Lactococcus and Lactovum. “Strepto-” (Greek: ‘chain, pliant, easily twisted’) + “coccus” (Latin: ‘spherical bacterium’); divide along a single axis, thereby generating pairs or chains that may appear bent or twisted. Streptococcus species are non-motile, non-spore forming bacteria and are catalase-nagative; they are facultative anaerobic. Streptococcus species are cocci (spherical) and grape-like clusters under the microscopic scheme and are facultative anaerobic. Streptococcus includes over than 45 species, that are mostly non-pathogens and harmless. Many of species are normal flora of the throat, saliva, mouth, upper respiratory tract, intestine, skin and mucous membranes of humans, animals and other organisms, worldwide.
